Say Goodbye to Acidity: How to Get Rid of Heartburn (Naturally)
I always joke that God gave me GERD and Acidity so I could heal myself and share the information with the world!
Acidity was how I was introduced to the world of healing naturally and functional medicine. I had Hiatus Hernia, GERD, Acid Reflux, Ulcers and what not….so I know how feeling heavy after every meal, feeling bloated and waking up with burning in chest and heart palpitations in the middle of the night feels.
But I have been noticing how acidity has become… NORMAL? Popping an antacid or PPI blocker every morning before breakfast or before heading out of home has somehow become acceptable with “age”.
Chronic acidity is not normal. Not at any age.
If you need antacids after meals, you wake up with a heartburn or acid in your throat, or feel bloated every day — your body is asking for help.
I will help you break down acidity simply, because most people are treating acidity the wrong way.
The biggest question is - Is heartburn really “too much acid”?
Surprising answer, most of the time – No. We have all grown up seeing antacids commercials showing that too much acid production or over eating causes heartburn and reflux, “Acidity means excess stomach acid.” But most people have low or poorly regulated stomach acid, not high.
When stomach acid is low:
- food doesn’t digest properly, especially proteins
- it ferments
- gas builds up
- pressure pushes acid upward
- you feel heartburn and acid reflux
So the heart burn isn’t always from “too much acid.” It’s from poor stomach acid production. This is why antacids give temporary relief but never solve the root cause of the problem.
Why is acidity so common today?
Because modern lifestyle and diet quietly damages digestion.
Think about your day:
- coffee on empty stomach
- Skipping breakfast
- eating in a rush
- stress all day
- long sitting hours
- eating processed and packaged food, seed oils, genetically modified food
- late dinners
- poor sleep
All of these weaken your gut. In fact, stress alone can reduce stomach acid by up to 40%. Your body literally cannot digest properly when it feels unsafe or stressed.
Acidity isn’t just a food problem. It’s a lifestyle + nervous system problem.
Also, there are a few hidden causes of chronic acidity and GERD that goes beyond food
Acidity often has deeper root causes like.
- H. pylori infection
- Gut Inflammation
- Slow Digestion
- Thyroid Imbalance
- Chronic Stress
- Leaky Gut
- Irregular meal timing
Which means, it’s rarely “just spicy food.” It’s your entire system asking for rebalancing.
Why don’t medicines permanently fix heartburn?
Antacids and PPI blockers suppress symptoms, not fix the problem as prolonged use can:
- reduce stomach acid
- slow digestion further
- affect nutrient absorption leading to deficiencies (B12, iron, magnesium)
- damage the gut lining
- can worsen gut health long term
So you feel better for a few hours or days, but the root problem grows silently.
This is why many people say, “I’ve been on medication for years but acidity keeps coming back.”

So how do you actually get rid of acidity naturally?
Instead of suppressing acid, support digestion. Here’s what actually works long term:
1. Heal your gut first
Better gut = less reflux.
Focus on:
- anti-inflammatory foods
- fibre
- probiotics
- gut healing nutrients
2. Fix meal timings
Your digestive system loves rhythm.
Make below lifestyle shifts:
- early dinners (at least 3 hrs before bedtime)
- no heavy late-night meals
- proper gaps between meals
- no skipping meals
- 10 mins walk post meals
Digestion slows down at night. Late eating = reflux.
3. Manage stress (this is huge)
Your gut and brain are directly connected (the Brain – Gut Axis)
When you’re stressed:
- acid production drops
- digestion slows
- bloating increases
Simple habits like – slow chewing, mindful eating, walking after meals, better sleep and breathwork can reduce acidity more than medicines.
4. Identify root causes
If acidity is chronic, look deeper:
- gut infections like H Pylori
- thyroid issues
- metabolic health
- inflammation markers
This is where functional medicine testing becomes powerful. Because you stop guessing. You get answers.
Digestion can improve naturally
Your body knows how to heal itself, it only needs a little support from your side. When digestion improves, you’ll notice:
- less burning
- lighter stomach
- better bowel movements
- better energy
- fewer cravings
- deeper sleep
- clearer mind
Many of my clients often say, “I didn’t realise how heavy I felt until I felt better again.” That’s what real healing feels like. Just… easy.
When should you seek professional help?
If you have:
- daily acidity
- long-term GERD
- bloating after every meal
- dependency on antacids/PPI blockers
- thyroid or hormonal issues
- unexplained fatigue or weight loss
- H Pylori infection
It’s time to stop self-medicating and understand your root cause. Because chronic acidity is rarely random. It’s your body’s way of saying: “Something deeper needs attention.”

My two cents
Acidity is not your enemy – it’s a signal. And when you listen instead of suppressing it, everything changes. Healing isn’t about removing acid. It’s about rebalancing your gut, realigning your lifestyle, rebuilding digestion, and rising into lasting vitality.
If you’re ready to stop managing symptoms and start healing at the root, take the first step.
