Decoding Thyroid Disorders

From anxiety, to brain fog, to fatigue, to digestive issues, to hair loss, to skin issues, to hot flashes…did you know our body speaks to us in symptoms?

For many people with Thyroid, the symptom list feels endless!

It can feel like the life force is reducing from the body. Some may say it’s just “age”, but I have had clients in their 20s experiencing these symptoms. The truth is, these symptoms are a sign of a deeper problem, it is your body’s way of saying that it is out of balance.

You might be thinking

“How are these symptoms connected and where do I even start to feel better?”

I have helped many clients with Thyroid and Hashimoto’s in the last few years and here’s what I have discovered:

Symptoms aren’t random. They’re signals.

That also means your symptoms are not permanent.

They’re your body’s messages – once you learn how to read them.

Each of these symptoms are your body’s way of telling you where the imbalance lies and what you need to support for your body to heal.

Decoding Thyroid

Thyroid disorders are increasingly common, yet many people continue to struggle despite being on medication for years. Fatigue, weight gain, anxiety, hair loss, brain fog, and mood changes are often brushed off as “normal” or blamed on stress or age.

The truth is, thyroid dysfunction is rarely just a thyroid problem.

In functional medicine, we decode thyroid issues by looking deeper — at why the thyroid is struggling in the first place.

In my experience, when we address the root causes, even life long health issues and symptoms can fade away in just a few days or weeks.

Many people when they are diagnosed with Thyroid disorder, assume that the Thyroid medication would “fix” their Thyroid and make the symptoms go away. But the truth is, their Thyroid medication dosages keep increasing and so does their symptoms.

Thyroid - Is a Responsive Gland

The thyroid is a small gland, but it plays a powerful role in regulating metabolism, energy, temperature, mood, digestion, fertility, and overall vitality.

However, the thyroid does not work alone. It’s function is closely influenced by:

  • The gut
  • The liver
  • The immune system
  • Stress hormones
  • Nutrient status
  • Toxin exposures

When any of these systems are out of balance, the thyroid often becomes the messenger, not the root cause.

Common Root Causes Behind Thyroid Dysfunction

Chronic Stress & Cortisol Imbalance

Long-term stress elevates cortisol, which suppresses thyroid hormone production and blocks the conversion of T4 to active T3 hormone. This conversion is one of the most overlooked contributors to hypothyroid symptoms.

Gut Inflammation & Poor Digestion

Nearly 20% of thyroid hormone conversion happens in your gut.

Leaky gut, food sensitivities, infections, and bacterial overgrowth  can impair absorption of nutrients and trigger autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s.

Autoimmune Disease of Thyroid (Hashimoto’s & Graves’)

Most thyroid disorders are autoimmune in nature and many times these are not even diagnosed. The immune system mistakenly attacks thyroid tissue, often years before TSH levels change. Without addressing immune triggers, symptoms persist despite medication.

Nutrient Deficiencies

Thyroid hormone production and activation depend on key nutrients such as:

  • Iodine
  • Selenium
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium

Deficiencies are common, especially in individuals with digestive issues, chronic acidity and  chronic inflammation

Liver Overload & Poor Detoxification

The liver converts inactive T4 into active T3 hormone. A sluggish or overloaded liver — due to toxins, poor diet, or hormonal imbalances — can significantly impact thyroid function.

Environmental Toxins

Plastics, pesticides, heavy metals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with thyroid signaling and worsen autoimmune activity.

Hormonal Imbalances

Insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, and cortisol dysfunction often coexist with thyroid disorders, creating a cycle that prevents true healing.

Why Medication Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Thyroid medication can be life-saving and necessary — but it does not address your symptoms and the root causes.

Thyroid medicines usually make you feel better for the initial phase and don’t really do anything for most of the symptoms beyond a time.

Thyroid medicine cannot fix:

  • Why hormones aren’t converting properly (T4 to T3)

  • Why the immune system is attacking the thyroid (Hashimoto’s or Graves)

  • Why symptoms persist despite “normal” labs (nutritional deficiencies, digestive disorders and stress)

This is where many clients feel stuck, frustrated, and unheard despite taking Thyroid medicines for years.
